Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - WOW

We're staying in a downtown hotel in Kuala Lumpur. We can see the monorail right outside our window. We can see an intersection where 5 or 6 streets come together. Our corner room has large windows on two sides. The windows don't seal all the way and so we hear lots of street noise but traffic isn't so bad.

We tried to go to the Petronas Towers one morning. There is a sky bridge between the 41st and 42nd floors of the two towers that looked interesting. The hotel personnel helped us find the subway station and gave us enough instructions that we could buy tickets at the ticket machine. Once we had tickets another passenger escorted us to our train and was actually on his way to work at the towers. He was an engineer for Petronas and walked us all the way to the ticket line for the sky bridge before he went to work. Different sources said tickets for the sky bridge were free and other sources said the tickets cost RM80 ($25+). We were hoping for free tickets but when we got there the cost was RM80 for adults and RM30 for children under 12. That would have been $125+ to go on the sky bridge. We opted not to go up to the sky bridge. We reasoned that we had been on top of grandma and grandpa's building in Manila (39th floor) and had seen a big city view before. We came up with plan "B".

We're getting pretty good at going with the flow and improvising. The first part of plan "B" included taking lots of pictures of the towers and bridge. Some pictures even included us jumping. Jumping pictures are fun to take. The second part of plan "B" involved walking around the towers to the park on the way to the third part at the science museum. The park was beautiful with synchronized fountains, a wading pool, a cushioned running track (that I wanted to use), and a very large playground for children. The park was very well cared for and made me forget that we were in the middle of the city. It was beautifully landscaped with tropical plants, grass, and lots of paths and benches for sitting and relaxing. The science museum was in the fanciest mall I've ever been in.

So far my first impressions of Kuala Lumpur and Malaysia have been very good.

  1. You are now in a place in this world I have never even heard of. My world is so limited--and you are opening up new worlds to your children by having them experience different cultures in a world I never knew existed. And you are finding beauty and peace in your "new worlds." I really admire your whole family for what you are doing.
