Food in India

So we flew into India really early in the morning, at around 4. Our tour started right after that, and the first place we go to is what? McDonald's. Yes, we went to McDonald's in India. One thing different was that there wasn't any hamburgers on the menu, because cows are holy here. So, a hamburger joint that doesn't serve hamburgers, yes, that's what we ate at. We had pancakes, if you were wondering.

Here at Rising Star, we can either eat with the kids, or eat our own "American" food back in the hostel. The kids have rice and curry for almost every meal. I don't really have a liking for Indian food just yet, so I only eat one or 2 meals a day with them. Our "American" food is peanut butter, nutella, and toast. Sometimes we get some pasta, or fresh bananas and apples. The peanut butter isn't normal peanut butter, but it almost tastes normal, so we eat it. Nutella disappears like nothing else around here, we aren't sure who eats it all yet.

The kids all eat at the same time, for about a half an hour. They have these little flat bowls that they eat with. There's probably a name for them, but I don't know it. They are like plates with high edges. Whatever. The kids sit on the ground and they don't use utensils to eat. Imagine eating rice without a fork. It's kind of hard when it's not clumped together. But these kids do it every meal, so they are pros. I'm always a little stiff after sitting cross legged for a half an hour, but these kids have been doing it their whole lives, so they just spring right up after.

  1. I have no idea what Nutella is, but it must be good if it keeps disappearing. Is beef (like hamburger) illegal? I know that cows are sacred--I have never understood the history of how they came to be secret. Explain that (in one paragraph) someday.
That would double my knowledge of India.
Love your comments. Love, Grandpa Hull

  2. What can I say--you were rescued from a turkey--an entirely new version of Turkey bowl (football game on Thanksgiving)
