Church Adventures

Our family is LDS, or Mormon. We try to go to church every week if we can, but sometimes it is easier said than done. This is a brief recap of all of the times that we went/tried to go to church.

UPDATE: added all of January. Something must be wrong, because it was fairly easy to get to church this month.

UPDATE: added the rest of the trip, up till May. Added in cities where I forgot to previously.

August 5 - Washington D.C. - It took us 45 minutes by metro, and made it in time.
August 12 - Washington D.C. - Barely made it on time. After, there was a ward potluck.
August 19 - Washington D.C. - It was pouring rain, and we got soaked, even with our umbrellas.
August 26 - Washington D.C. - No incidents to report, but we did speak in Sacrament Meeting.
September 2 - Boston - We walked for 2 miles to get to church, then afterwards we took a bus straight to New York.
September 9 - Prague, Czech Republic - We got off at the wrong tram stop and had to walk the rest of the way. We were 20 minutes late.
September 16 - Dresden, Germany - We left very early, to get to church on time. We took a few wrong trains and barely got there on time. Very nice people tried to help us get there, but we don't speak German.
September 23 - Krakow, Poland - We got there on time, but nearly didn't find the church. The branch ended up being 2 small American families, 2 or 3 polish people, and 4 missionaries.
September 30 - Krakow, Poland - Went to the same church as before, no problems.
October 7 - Budapest, Hungary - General Conference. We stayed in the hotel and watched a few sessions on a laptop.
October 14 - Budapest, Hungary - No problems.
October 21 - Florence, Italy - We walked for an hour to find the church. Google maps had said it was under 2 kilometers. Church started an hour earlier than we had thought, so we were late, again.
October 28 - La Spezia, Italy - No problem getting there, but it was pouring rain and hail. We can now say that we have been through hail and back to get to church. When we got to the church, it was locked and nobody was there. 5 minutes before church started, everyone arrived.
November 4 - Ephesus, Turkey - We were on a cruise, didn't go to church.
November 11 - Rome, Italy - We couldn't find tickets. Tickets for the subway are sold at the tobacco shops, which are all closed Sunday morning. Didn't attend church.
November 18 - Chennai, India - Arrived at rising star in the morning, did not attend church.
November 25 - Chennai, India - Woke up early at 5:00 and drove 2 hours to get to church. Got there 10 minutes early.
December 2 - Chennai, India - Same as the 25th.
December 9 - Chennai, India - Woke up early to pack, drove to church for 2 hours. Got there 10 minutes early.
December 16 - Hyderabad, India - We had to fit into two taxi's. One had my mom, Seth, Joe, and me in it; and the other one had Jenna and dad. We got a confirmation that the driver knew where it was, but of course he didn't. He took us to every other church in the city though. We finally saw the church's sign and yelled to pull over. We ended up being 2 hours late to church, because it started an hour earlier than we thought, and the taxi made us an hour late.
December 23 - Bangkok, Thailand -Very easy, we had our friend's driver drive us to church. He already knew the way and everything.
December 30 - Nong Khai, Thailand - We told him the address, showed him the map, and he still couldn't find it. We looked for an hour, but we could not find the church. We ended up going back to the hotel and watching a conference talk and doing seminary.
January 6 - Vang Vieng, Laos - We couldn't find any church in Laos, so we got permission from our bishop to do the sacrament. We had church in our hotel room. We all bore our testimonies and had the sacrament.
January 13 - Chaing Rai, Thailand - Dad and I (Sam) were sick, so we stayed back. The rest of the family walked to church and didn't have any problems. They had coconut ice cream afterwards.
January 20 - Chaing Mai, Thailand - We were in the neighborhood the Saturday before, and so we found the church. It was really easy, it was even on the map! After church there was a member who took us to his house for the afternoon. It was really nice, but we did miss out on afternoon naps.
January 27 - Siem Reap, Cambodia - We ran into the missionaries on Saturday, and they taught us where the church was. We were able to tell the tuk tuk driver where to go. We got there on time, with no added stress.
February 3 - Phnom Penh, Cambodia - Spent several hours Saturday finding the church, and we ended up getting there on time.
February 10 - Manila, Philippines - Grandma and Grandpa knew where the church was. We walked there and were plenty early.
February 17 - Manila, Philippines - Walked to the same church as the previous week.
February 24 - Manila, Philippines - Took taxis to the international branch. On time.
March 3 - Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia - Took subway and didn't have a problem finding the church.
March 10 - Tioman, Malaysia - I was sick, we had a Book of Mormon readathon.
March 17 - Singapore - Took a bus and were there on time.
March 24 - Katoomba, Australia - $40 taxi to church. Got there on time.
March 31 - Sydney, Australia - Took subway and walked to church.
April 7 - Wellington, New Zealand - Went to church by driving the RV. It was very cold.
April 14 - South Island, New Zealand - Listened to General Conference in the RV.
April 21 - Auckland, New Zealand - With our friends the Shewards, so they knew just where to go.
April 28 - Beijing, China - Got off on the wrong bus stop and had to walk a couple miles, we were pretty late.
May 5 - Beijing, China - Took the same bus, but we were on time.

  1. I really admire the goal you'r family set to go/or do church every week. I know now with travling that it is hard to do plans you set, so way to go for keeping to that! ~Alyssa Jeffrey

  2. My friend that I go to Haiti with says, that what ever language is spoken while you attend church you will be able to speak when you are in heaven. Just something fun to think about.

It is so cold here. Our hot water pipes have been frozen for four days. We were finally able to get them flowing tonight with blessings...NO LEAKS!

    Enjoy whatever warmth you have.

  3. We love your effort in getting to church each week. We have a map and a church identified each week, but once in a while we run into a surprise--like last Sunday, it was a different ward than we expected--the other ward had moved to a different building. I loved that idea of maybe learning to speak different languages by going to church in different languages. We just love your blogs--your spirit, your adventures, except, don't talk too much about eating cockroaches--that was too much! Love, Grandpa and Grandma
